Most people picture a widow mother in Braj as someone who came here for bhakti. A few did, Most did not.
The common story is simpler and harder. Her husband died. The property went to the sons. Slowly she became the extra person in the house — the one eating one more roti, needing one more medicine. Someone in the family said the words out loud: you will be happier in Vrindavan. She was put on a train. Nobody came back for her.
Now she is 65, or 72, or 80. She sings four hours in a bhajan ashram for a bowl of rice and a few rupees. When her knees give out, that income stops. She has no pension, no bank balance, no son who picks up the phone. Her medicine bill for one month is larger than everything she earns in one month.
This is not a rare case. Our foundation currently has 512 mothers registered, and the list grows almost every week.
